Pre-Cruise Planning: Laying the Groundwork for a Fantastic Voyage
Do Your Homework: Before you even book, research different cruise lines, ships, and itineraries to find the perfect fit for your interests, budget, and travel style. Consider whether you dream of sunny Caribbean beaches, exploring European cities, or the stunning landscapes of Alaska. Read past passenger reviews and compare prices. Working with a Travel Advisor can really add value to your research phase. They work with all the cruise lines and can help you sort through all the options and compare the different ships and itineraries to find the one that best fits your vision. They also may have taken some of the cruises you’re interested in and can provide first-hand feedback on the experience.
Having a port strategy is Key: Don’t rely on the cruise line’s marketing for shore excursions. Research your cruise ports in advance to understand what you want to see and do. However, don’t pick a cruise based on just one port of call, as itineraries can change due to unforeseen circumstances like weather. Instead, choose a cruise travelling across a broadly appealing region. Sometimes, you may be surprised as the ports not on your list provide your best memories.
Weather Wisdom: In this era of increasing weather extremes, it pays to do a little weather recon before you embark. For example, be aware of hurricane season in the Caribbean. Check the weather in the ports on your trip, as conditions can vary between islands or destinations.
Leverage Smart Flight Strategies: If you’re flying to your departure port, book flights with times that anticipate delays. Aim to arrive as early as possible on embarkation day, or even the day before, to cushion against flight disruptions. Similarly, book your return flight for the afternoon in case of disembarkation delays. If your flight is delayed, inform airline personnel you’re a cruise passenger and contact your cruise line immediately.
Cabin Comfort Considerations: The best cabin isn’t always the most expensive suite.
Pick a cruise cabin that works for your personal needs and budget. Consider the destination and length of your cruise when choosing between inside, ocean view, or balcony cabins. Think about potential noise from public areas when reviewing deck plans. For your first cruise, you might not spend much time in your room anyway. We have had some of our best cruise experiences where we chose a less expensive cabin. We picked a ship with amazing common spaces and only used our cabin to sleep. We could then spend the money saved on the cabin on more interesting excursions.
Drink Package Decisions: If you plan on enjoying beverages onboard, research cruise line drink packages and buy before you set sail. You’ll likely save money by purchasing in advance. Understand what each package includes, as there are often different tiers. Be aware that if one adult in a cabin purchases a package, all other adults sharing the same cabin usually need to buy the same package. Do the math to see if a package is cost-effective for your drinking habits.
Know Your Costs: Cruises are often marketed as inclusive, but not everything is included. Be aware of potential extra costs for specialty restaurants, alcoholic and specialty beverages, the spa, internet access, and shore excursions. Also, familiarize yourself with service charges, which are often automatically added to bar bills.
Travel Advisor Advantage: Consider booking your cruise with a travel advisor. They can guide you through the entire process, help you choose the correct ship and cabin, and potentially offer promotions you can’t get by booking directly with the cruise line.
Embarkation Day: Setting Sail on the Right Foot
Board Early: Book your boarding time online as soon as you can. Aiming for the earliest boarding time allows you to maximize your vacation time and enjoy the ship’s amenities before it gets too crowded. The ship is usually up and running early on embarkation day.
Carry-On Essentials: You may not have immediate access to your cabin, so pack your swimsuit and any essentials in your carry-on bag. You can immediately change in onboard public restrooms and enjoy the pool or other onboard activities.
Ship Familiarization: Getting your bearings and getting a feel for the ship can take some time. If offered, consider joining a ship tour. Otherwise, explore the main public areas on all decks to understand the ship’s layout.
Muster Drill is Mandatory: Do the muster drill! It’s a mandatory safety drill where passengers and crew practice emergency procedures. Take it seriously, as crew members check attendance, and cruise lines are increasingly making these drills as convenient as possible for passengers to participate in.
Bypass the Buffet (Initially): After the muster drill, many hungry passengers head straight to the buffet. Consider checking your app or with guest services for alternative dining venues that might be less crowded on embarkation day.
Your Cabin Key is Your Card: Upon check-in, you’ll receive a keycard that unlocks your cabin door. This card also acts as your onboard charge card for purchases throughout the ship. Keep it secure! You might consider bringing a lanyard with you to carry your card. You can typically purchase these on board but at a significant price. We recycle ours from previous cruises and business conferences and keep them in our suitcases to prepare for our next cruise.
Onboard Enjoyment: Making the Most of Your Time at Sea
Daily Planner Power: Your cruise line will provide a daily planner (either paper or via their app) that is your best friend for all things fun. It’s loaded with the schedule of onboard activities, showtimes, and dining options. Highlight or save the activities that interest you. You will also get updates on port activities, excursions, entertainment options and other essential information.
Dress Code Decoding: Check your cruise documents closely and note the evening dress codes. Pack appropriately, keeping in mind that daywear is always casual. While formal nights might still occur, many nights are casual or casual. Some cruise lines have eliminated formal nights entirely, which can save on your packing decisions.
Tech Tactics: Cruise internet may be expensive and likely slow, especially on older ships. If you purchase a package, look for routers to improve your signal. Put your phone on airplane mode before the ship leaves port to avoid expensive roaming charges. Having data in port can be helpful in leveraging maps, transportation, and other functions on your phone. Consider an eSIM (see our other blog) to get cost-effective data plans you can use while in port.
Reservation Recommendations: Make reservations in advance for specialty dining and popular onboard entertainment if possible. This will help you secure your spot and avoid disappointment. Often, these open for booking well before your cruise departure, so watch for communications from your cruise line or travel advisor.
Cabin Comfort and Convenience: Cruise ship rooms have limited space. Unpack your luggage when it arrives and store empty suitcases under the bed or in the closet. Consider using magnetic hooks to maximize storage space on the metal cabin walls. Bring a multi-plug adapter (without a surge protector, which is often prohibited) to accommodate your electronic devices.
Meet and Mingle: Consider participating in some of the group activities on board. This is a terrific way to meet people and get insider tips about cruising or port destinations.
Dining Delights Beyond the Buffet: While the buffet is convenient, don’t overlook the main dining room for breakfast and lunch. The quality might be better. Remember you can often order multiple items from the dining room menu to try new dishes.
Gratuity Guidance: Most large cruise lines automatically add a service charge (gratuity) to your onboard account. You can tip extra for exceptional service, but it’s not mandatory for the automatically charged gratuities. Double-check your bar bills, as gratuities can be automatically added to your account. Also, remember to check your cruise pricing, as sometimes gratuities are included in the base price.
Shore Excursions: Exploring Beyond the Ship
Careful Choices: Choose your shore excursions carefully, considering your interests, fitness level, and time in port. You can book through the cruise line or independently.
Cruise Line Convenience vs. Independent Savings: Booking through the cruise line guarantees the ship will wait if your excursion is delayed. Independent excursions can be more cost-effective and provide more options, but ensure they fit within your time in port, as the ship won’t wait for you if you’re late.
Advance Booking is Best: Many popular shore excursions sell out, so consider booking your top choices in advance. These are often available to book in advance of sailing so its best to book early to ensure you get the options that work for you.
Punctuality is Paramount: Pay close attention to the “all aboard” time in port. These times are not suggestions, and the ship will leave without you. Set alarms to allow ample time to return to the ship and ensure that your excursion provider has sufficient time to get you back before departure.
Cash is King (Sometimes): While onboard purchases are cashless, bring some cash for your port days for local purchases, tips for guides or taxi drivers, and smaller vendors who may not accept cards. US dollars are often accepted in the Caribbean and some other tourist-heavy ports.
Essential Packing: Preparing for Your Time Away
Pack Smart, Not Excessively: Staterooms have limited storage space. Focus on versatile clothing items you can mix and match. You probably won’t wear half of what you pack.
Dress for the Occasion(s): Check the dress codes and pack accordingly. If you plan to participate, bring an outfit for a formal night—pack layers, as temperatures vary on the ship and in different climates.
Carry-On Must-Haves: In your carry-on luggage, pack essential documents (boarding passes, passport/ID, travel insurance information), medications, a change of clothes, toiletries, and electronics.
Leave Prohibited Items Behind: Check your cruise line’s list of prohibited items. Examples include clothing irons, power strips with surge protectors, candles, and illegal substances.
Don’t Forget Medications: Bring any prescription or over-the-counter medications and a small first-aid kit. Purchasing these on the ship can be more expensive. If you are prone to motion sickness, bring seasickness medication or remedies.
Sun Protection is Key: Pack sunscreen, even for cooler weather cruises, as you’ll likely spend time outdoors.
Reminders for Smooth Sailing
Learn Basic Ship Terms: Familiarize yourself with terms like forward, aft, port, and starboard. It will help you navigate and understand directions on the ship.
Mind the Noise: Be mindful of noise levels, especially in hallways and your cabin, as walls are not entirely soundproof.
Stay Informed: Check the daily planner for important announcements and any changes to the schedule.
Resolve Issues Promptly: If you encounter issues with your onboard account or service, address them with guest services before the cruise ends.
